The movie that I would like to present to you this time is called “The Face Reader.” It was released on September 11, 2013 and is a period drama.

This movie is about physiognomy, a historical practice of fortune telling that has been used in Korea to predict people's future for a long time.

 

 

 

The Physiognomy

 

Many Koreans visit saju, tarot, and physiognomy cafes to see what they are about or get their fortune told. If you've traveled to Korea, you've probably seen posters of saju, tarot, and physiognomies advertised on storefronts. Saju, tarot, and physiognomy each have different meanings respectively. However, they are all related to predicting the future and destiny of people.

Physiognomy is part of the Sino-Korea (Chinese/Korean) culture. As a dictionary definition, it is one of the divine methods to predict one’s destiny studying one’s appearance and giving them insight to help them avoid some bad situation that could occur in the future. In simple terms, it is a means to predict things like one’s spouse, children, etc. of the person according to their appearance.

If you're interested, seeing "physiognomy" for fun can be a great experience. This type of practice is usually just for fun and enjoyment and it doesn't have much credibility. Furthermore person's “physiognomy” is continuously changing with experience, the flow of time, and the change in health and the mind.

 

Plot

All the statues of Samraman (All things and phenomena in the universe) of the world are contained in the face of a person!

When Naegyeong looks at a face, he is a prediction genius since he sees everything about a person. "Yeonghong" had been living in the mountains with his brother-in-law ‘Phangheon’ and son ‘Jin-hyeong’. She worked on the vision/sight of people in a kisaeng house.

In the city of Hanyang, the rumor begins to spread that Naegyeong is a genius of the physiognomy, so he went to Hanyang city. He was recommended to Kim Jong-seo to help and recruit talented people, that is why he enters the palace. When he realizes that Suyang is conspiring, he decides that he wants to change the fate of the precarious Joseon dynasty.
